Starbucks Coffee and Tata Global Beverages are planning to expand their retail network in hospitals, educational institutions and corporate campuses. The outlets at these locations would be a combination of standalone ones, including the 4,000-sq ft flagship café, located at malls, airports and metro stations and commercial complexes. Starbucks currently has about 17000 stores globally. Starbucks not only plans to increase its retail footprint, but is also looking to roll out its operations in a number of other cities, such as Bangalore and Chennai. The Tata Starbucks spokesperson said, “We will continue to work to open stores quickly and ensure we exceed the expectations of our customers and build strong presence in the market.” Nearest rival, the Bangalore-headquartered Cafe Coffee Day, the largest coffee chain in India with 1,200 outlets, plans to add 1,000 stores by 2014, while Lavazza, owner of Barista, also has an aggressive expansion plan for its flagship format Expression.
