Decathlon partners with Flipkart to sell its sports merchandise

In a bid to strengthen sports offering, online retailer Flipkart has partnered with sports retail Decathlon to sell its sports merchandise on flipkart.

As part of this tie-up, Decathlon’s entire selection of sports equipment, fitness products, clothing, footwear, and accessories will be sold on Flipkart, enabling Decathlon to reach Flipkart’s customer base of over 100 million including users from tier II cities and towns.

Rishi Vasudev, head of Flipkart Fashion said “Categories like running shoes are available in good brands, but other categories like camping equipment or a football used to come from the marketplace from smaller sellers. Through this partnership, users can have access to branded products from Decathlon along with the products already being sold. Sports and fitness industry in India is estimated to be worth $1.8 billion, while the online penetration in the category is currently pegged at only 7%. Sports is an important category for Flipkart with 100% year-on-year growth, and the company expects this partnership to bolster the sports category growth by 30-50%”.

Top ecommerce players Flipkart and Amazon India are both looking at different kinds of offline partnerships to compete with each other. Amazon India recently partnered with retail giant Shoppers Stop to sell the latter’s products on the Amazon platform.
