We are looking into launching a pret label and rebranding the existing bridal line: Pali Sachdev

Quiet, reticent and self-effacing is how their website describes them, but Monapali is considered as a zap to the Indian fashion industry by fashionistas. In conversation with Indian Retailer, Pali Sachdev, co-founder of Monapali, opened up on what makes them stalwarts of the industry and how business partnership with sister, Mona Lamba, has travelled so far.

When and why did you start out as a designer duo? What is it that makes you stalwarts of Indian fashion industry?
Both Mona and I had always been interested in fashion and art and designing came very naturally to both of us. We had previously done a few exhibitions and events and in 1987 we launched our first store in Kolkata.

We started designing at a time, when designers were few and far between.  We were the first to work on kantha, shibori, terracotta and various printing techniques in a fashion context. What makes us stalwart is the fact that we worked on various techniques that seemed unheard of at that time. Our main USP was blending of various art forms.

How do you resolve business disagreements?
For a business to be successful, we believe it is important for everyone's voices to be heard. If there is any disagreement, we talk it out.

How do you prevent business issues from becoming familial baggage?
When there is a difference of opinion, it is important to let the issue rest, rather than raking it up time and again. We realise that ultimately, we have the best interest of the business at heart. You also learn over time that no good comes from business issues becoming familial baggage.

Are there any expansion plans for your already sprawling business? Do you intend to hand it down to your generations?
We are looking into launching a pret label and rebranding the existing bridal line.  Yes - we are planning on handing it down to the next generation.

How do you cope with the follies made by your sibling in business matters?
In a business, mistakes are often made - as long as we learn from them. You cannot move forward holding people up for mistakes made.

Who do you approach for third party opinion?
We normally work on new ideas between ourselves. Or we consult our brother who is also a part of the business.

Share your challenges and advantages of working together?
When you are working together, different opinions often help you see another side or perspective that you cannot see yourself.

What were your initial and what are your future expectations from each other?
The aim currently is to ensure that the family business increases and that we give it our best.

What advice do you have for other sibling duo/trio in business?
Working with your siblings can be very challenging at times, but on the flipside you are working with individuals who know your strengths and weaknesses, at times better than you do.
